Movies are a great way for introverts to relax and recharge. They provide rest for our overly active minds. They help us escape the mundane. Like a great novel, they feed our imagination and help us view the world from a new perspective.
The best part about a movie is that it can impart all of the above benefits from the comforts of home. It is one of those delightful activities that can be done alone or in a group; inside your house or out; in your underwear or wearing those pesky clothing things.
If you’re anything like me, choosing what movie to watch is an epic decision. With so many options, good and bad, it’s tough to find exactly what you’re looking for. So, for your viewing pleasure, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite movies to inspire introverts.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
This movie chronicles the misadventures of Charlie, an internal and passive teen, and his “island of misfit toys” friends. We see their struggles and triumphs over the span of one year. We are shown how being an overlooked observer has its perks. Introverts, especially, will be able to relate to Charlie’s experiences as an outsider. His deep bond with his two best friends, Sam and Patrick, shows that true friendship trumps popularity any day.
Amelie
As I pointed out in The Challenges of Being an Introverted Woman, Amelie is one of the few movies out there whose lead character is an introverted female. The title character is a quirky, imaginative introvert that you can’t help but love. The movie wonderfully illustrates how a daydreamy loner can have a beautiful life. For single introverts, it reminds us that there is someone out there for everyone.
Gattaca
Vincent is a naturally conceived human living in a future where most people are genetically engineered. His heart defect and myopia make him an outcast among his near-perfect peers. It also makes his dream of becoming an astronaut impossible. Or so you think. This inspiring story shows that true character often develops on the outskirts of popular opinion. We see that greatness is achieved away from the crowd.
Never Let Me Go
“You have to know who you are, and what you are. It’s the only way to lead decent lives.” Miss Lucy, Never Let Me Go
This is a bit of a sad one. Never Let Me Go chronicles the lives of three close friends who are destined to die young. Introverts will be inspired by the quiet poise of the lead character, played by Carrie Mulligan. It is rare to see an introverted female portrayed so accurately and beautifully.
Benny & Joon
This unconventional love story illustrates that true love thrives on mutual acceptance, not social conventions. Once again, Johnny Depp captivates in a role that reminds us that it’s okay to be different.
Sam: You don’t like raisins?
Joon: Not really.
Sam: Why?
Joon: They used to be fat and juicy and now they’re twisted. They had their lives stolen. Well, they taste sweet, but really they’re just humiliated grapes. I can’t say I am a big supporter of the raisin council.
I Am Legend
“The world is quieter now. We just have to listen. If we listen, we can hear God’s plan.” Anna, I Am Legend
Ok, so maybe I’m just trying to sneak a zombie movie onto the list with this one, but hear me out. Will Smith’s character is the sole survivor in NYC after a plague kills most of the human race and turns the rest into monsters. During his forced isolation his true character and ingenuity is revealed. His focused determination offers hope to the entire human race. Also, his dog is adorable.
There’s a great movie called The Station Agent. Would definitely fit on this list 🙂
Bing! Bing! Bing! 🙂 Trung’s comment is right: The Station Agent would be a great fit on this list. After a recent viewing, I knew Michaela’s Introvert Spring might cover the topic of movies. A simple search found this blog post, and the first comment is what I wanted to share, and now reinforce.
Nothing beats Bennie and Joon for entertainment. Wallflower never wavers from its theme. Amelie left me a bit bewildered, but is recommended by many. The Station Agent covers the introvert field with aplomb and is surely worth your time.
I think it might be one of my favourite film ever….
With two more syllables in the first line, the Wallflower quote would be a traditional haiku:
You see MANY things. (5 syllables)
You keep quiet about them (7)
And you understand (5)
The movie ‘About time’ features Rachel McAdams. Her character and some others’ is one of the only movies where I can relate to the character(s) and real life. I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for some comfort or a realistic look at what introverts are like in every day life (without having screwed up lives and mental health issues as they do in most movies).
